Lemongrass is mainly produced in Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. India being the largest producer of lemongrass exports 80% of the produce to other countries like Japan, West Europe, USA etc. Lemongrass oil is distilled from leaves and flowering tops. The oil has strong lemon-like odour, due to high percentage (over 75%) of citral in the oil. MAP cultivation in Assam especially in the Upper Brahmaputra Valley (Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia) due to suitable weather condition and availability of seeds has a wide scope to boost the economy and bring welfare to the farming community.
