Yak

Yak, known by its scientific name ‘Bos grunniens’ is a long-haired, short-legged ox like mammal found in Himalayan region of India. In Northeast India, rearing of wool from Yak is generally found in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. The National Research Centre on Yaks (NRCY) of Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh conducts scientific research and training programs on yaks reared in high altitude areas of the Himalayan region, mainly Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir (Leh-Ladakh). The quality of Yak wool is very much comfortable, soft and warm. Scarves and shawls made from pure yak wool are hard to find outside the Himalayan region.
